Is Sustainable Capitalism Possible? If so, how? If not, what is the alternative?
Location: The Governor Hindmarsh Hotel, 59 Port Road, Thebarton
Never before have the impacts of human activity on the environment been so profound. The transformations of the past two centuries, especially the past several decades, have generated not one but several possible environmental catastrophes.
Human civilisation (and countless species) is threatened not only by climate change, but ocean acidification, ozone depletion, and changes to freshwater and land use.
How did this happen? Time for a new economic system? Or can capitalism be saved? Made green and sustainable? (What does that mean?) Can we have capitalism without continuous growth? Continuous growth without continuous environmental destruction?
Speakers representing diverse political positions will explore this enduring environmental debate. Is sustainable capitalism possible? If not, is there an alternative?

"Australia has the most restrictive media in the western world. Censorship by omission denies Australians their democratic right to make sense of whole stratas of political and foreign policy. That's why Green Left Weekly is a beacon, doing a job of honourable journalism, as an agent of people, not power."
