Guantanamo Redux: The Obama Effect and its Significance for David Hicks and Australia
Tuesday October 20 2009 6:00pm.New Law School Building, University of Sydney, Camperdown, NSW
In this free seminar, a panel of experts will reflect upon steps recently taken in the US Congress to amend the Military Commissions Act 2006 and otherwise prepare for the January 2010 deadline imposed by the Obama administration for closure of Guantanamo Bay. What exactly is likely to change as a result of this process? What parts of the Bush administration’s legacy on counter-terrorism are likely to remain intact? What ramifications has the Obama administration’s policy redirection had so far for Australia? What impact might the Obama administration yet have in influencing the course of global policy-making on counter-terrorism and the treatment of detainees? More specifically, what could be the effect of US legislative change on the life and legal status of David Hicks, an Australian citizen who continues to live under conditions imposed as a consequence of his conviction under the Military Commissions Act? These, among other questions, will be taken up in the course of what promises to be a lively and provocative discussion.

The fate of 255 Tamil refugees fleeing a bloody war in Sri Lanka shows that underlying racism in Australia towards refugees has not disappeared with the fall of Howard.
Despite assertions to the contrary by the Liberal Party and others, the increase in asylum seekers is due to wars in Afghanistan and Sri-Lanka, as well as climate change and the economic crisis.
The Australian government and corporate elite have a vested interest in ensuring the people of Australia don't question our government's policies in this regard and therefore use refugees as racist scapegoats.
The meeting will discuss why this is so and how we can respond.

The workshop will discuss why we campaign and the basics of campaign strategy - what do we want, who can give it to us, how will we make them give it to us and what tactics can we use? A range of tools will be introduced to give you confidence in starting to think about campaigning, whether it be for planning local campaigns, or getting involved in state or national-level ones.
