We march, as so many women have done before us, to say that we are never to blame for rape or male violence. Those men who choose to commit these crimes are to blame. We march to demand our right to live without the fear or reality of rape and male violence and we demand an end to male violence against women, we take back this night to win the day. Climate Action Hobart meeting

Date: Tue 16 Oct, 5:30pm

Sustainable Living Tasmania, 1st Floor, 71 Murray St, Hobart. The ACT Government has just released what is easily Australia’s most detailed and most ambitious climate change action plan: http://www.environment.act.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0004/254947/AP2_Sept12_PRINT_NO_CROPS_SML.pdf The Plan sets out in some detail how the ACT expects to reach 40% reduction in greenhouse emissions target by 2020, and 100% reduction (zero net emissions) by 2060, and this despite the fact that emissions in the ACT have risen significantly since 1990. Climate Action Hobart’s Phil Harrington was involved over a 2-year period in the detailed analysis that supported the development of this plan: see http://www.environment.act.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0004/237892/Final_Report_27July2011.pdfhttp://www.environment.act.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0004/237892/Final_Report_27July2011.pdf and also: http://www.environment.act.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0011/237890/AP2_summary_of_underlying_assumptions_report_160911_final.pdf On Tuesday 16 October, at 5.30pm at Sustainable Living Tasmania, Phil will make a special presentation on the ACT’s plan, setting out how these ambitious targets can be met…with net financial savings to householders and residents of the ACT. With Tasmania’s Climate Action Plan failing to set targets, timetables or to quantify the expected impact of measures – and with the Plan due for review before the end of the year – it’s timely to look at good practice elsewhere, and to discuss what Tasmania can learn from the ACT’s experience. All welcome.

Public meeting: Council Meeting in Lilydale this Tuesday to demand an appeal to the Supreme Court to stop Maccas in the hills.

Date: Tue 23 Oct, 7:30pm

Tuesday, October 23 We need a crowd of people in the council chambers with placards demanding that the Council supports local democracy by launching this appeal. Even if an appeal is not launched on Tuesday we are laying the groundwork to pressure the newly elected council with a show of community pressure. The Shire of Yarra Ranges received over 1000 objections to the proposed McDonalds. They voted unanimously against the proposal. Yet VCAT dismissed the level of community opposition as a relevant factor when it approved the development. This is no just longer just a battle over a restaurant but one that raises the question of the whole integrity of Local Government. Do local communities and residents through their elected representative have the right to influence planning decisions or not? The No Maccas in the Hills campaign believe that we do and that the Shire of Yarra Ranges should fight for our rights through all available legal means by immediately launching an appeal to the Supreme Court. 7:30pm. Shire of Yarra Ranges Council Offices, Anderson St, Lilydale.

One in five women in Australia will experience sexual assault in their lifetime, others will experience other assaults. We need to reclaim our spaces – on the streets, in our homes, online, in workplaces; everywhere. Women have the right to live free of fear, free from the threats of physical, emotional and psychological abuse. Hyde Park. A family-friendly picnic from 4pm, followed by the traditional march from 7pm. Live music from woman-identified performers throughout the event.

Socialist Alliance Eastern Suburbs Branch: Youth In Trouble - Student Struggle in 2012.

Date: Wed 31 Oct, 7:00pm

Guest Speaker – Patrick Harrison member of Education Action Group, Sydney Uni and Resistance Sydney. Across the world youth and students have once again been leading struggles for social change. Right here in Australia, we've had a year of struggles against neoliberal attacks on education, with major campaigns across several campuses mobilising students en masse to fight back. Looking at the state of student politics and the federal government, how much further will these struggles go? Cultural Item: Student Action For Aboriginals (SAFA) - In the 60's, a group of students at Sydney University (SAFA, led by Charlie Perkins, Ann Curthoys, Jim Spigelman, e.a.) organised the Australian Freedom Rides to expose racial discrimination in NSW. They were inspired by the Freedom Rides against racial segregation in the USA, held by Martin Luther King's 'warriors'. Kinetic Energy's co-directors Graham Jones & Jepke Goudsmit will lead a reading of some of the most poignant scenes from their play on this historic event. Free basic meal from 630pm. Call Haskell for the address or info. All welcome. Eastern Suburbs Branch of Socialist Alliance holds an open meeting on the last Wednesday of every month usually near to Bondi Junction.

Sydney Feminists Film night: Sexual Assault - Naming the Unnamed Conspirator.

Date: Wed 31 Oct, 7:00pm

A brand new, powerful film that analyses the factors involved in rape and sexual assault cases. "Career prosecutor Anne Munch examines how societal attitudes influence legal cases involving sexual assault, and shows how rape cases frequently turn on the involvement of an 'unnamed conspirator' - the complex of myths and stories we tell ourselves as a culture about sex, gender, power, and responsibility." The film's focus on victim-blaming also explains some of the appalling commentary surrounding the tragic death of Jill Meagher. Wed Oct 31, 7pm. Red Rattler, Marrickville. Entry 50cents.
