URGENT: Rally for Aboriginal Cultural Education
Date: Fri 16 Mar, 12:00pm
URGENT: THIS FRIDAY, MARCH 16 Save Ballerrt Mooroop College! Rally for Aboriginal Cultural Education - Ballerrt Mooroop College 12:00pm until 2:00pm State Parliament - Spring and Bourke Streets Ballieu's government is attempting to close Melbourne's Last Indigenous School. This will be met with peaceful community resistance and a rally from Parliament to the Minister for Education's office in Collins St. The Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhoo...d Development have stated they are closing down the Ballerrt Mooroop College, the last surviving Aboriginal School in Melbourne. The closure announcement was sudden and shocked the school community and school committee. Aboriginal people in the area have worked hard to keep the school, but over the last twelve months the department has taken much of the land away and bulldozed the valuable student and community asset, the Gymnasium/Gathering Place. We affirm that our children deserve the same educational opportunities as every other Victorian child. Our children have the right to be educated in a culturally appropriate setting. The attempted closure of Ballerrt Mooroop College demonstrates the Victorian Education Department does not respect Indigenous culture or care about the educational outcomes of our children. We demand: - the entire school be placed under community ownership and management - the administration building be used to house community education - the protection of our Ceremonial Ground and Spirit Tree - all missing documentation of previous agreements made after the last occupation be returned https://www.facebook.com/#!/events/148158828640574/

KONY 2012. Why military intervention is never the answer.
Date: Fri 16 Mar, 6:30pm
Public meeting Guest speaker: Bersanji M Ibrahim (activist from Somalia). The Kony2012 advocacy campaign by Invisible Children has gone viral. It's successfully changed the scope of 'humanitarian marketing'. It's also a film rife with 'half-truths'. Kony2012 falsely insinuates that Uganda is still at war; that night commuters are still in Uganda; that Joseph Kony and his Lord's Resistance Army are the only sources of atrocity in the region; and that white people, especially Americans, are going to solve the problem. It advocates US military intervention and paints the Ugandan people as passive and in need of 'saving'. In a nutshell, it's a pro-war, paternalistic, and racist. In Melbourne over 18,000 people have clicked attending for the April 20 'Cover the night' event. If you are one of those people we welcome you to join this discussion. City Square, Melbourne.

Public meeting: Verity Burgmann on the importance of being extreme.
Date: Thu 22 Mar, 12:45pm - Thu 22 Mar, 1:15pm
Agitators, as Oscar Wilde observed, are essential to progress. Reforms are more likely to be achieved when sections of a social movement behave badly and demand more than reforms. The history of protest suggests that extremism in form and content shifts the spectrum of debate so moderate proponents of the same social movement emerge as the voice of compromise and reason; extremists strengthen the bargaining position of moderates, because authorities accede to moderate demands to weaken extremist challenges; and extremists keep the moderates more honest. Public meeting: Democracy & rule of law in Sri Lanka.
Date: Sun 25 Mar, 4:00pm
Following on from last month's crackdown on protesting fishing communities where one person was killed by security personnel, reports are that Herman Kumara, a longtime human right activist, is facing threats to his life. Kumara is one of the founding members of the Platform for Freedom in Sri Lanka and has collaborated with civil society organisations and trade unions across the country to give voice to those who wanted to express disagreement against oppressive government policies. This public forum will discuss issues of human rights in Sri Lanka. Speakers: Basil Fernando (director Policy & Program Development, Asian Human Rights Commission); Britto Fernando (president Right to Life, co-convenor Platform for Freedom). Rotunda R4, Building 8, Monash University Clayton Campus, Wellington Rd, Clayton (Melway 70 G10). Organised by People for Human Rights & Equality. Public meeting: Smuggled to freedom. Behind the anti-people smuggling rhetoric.
Date: Tue 27 Mar, 6:30pm
Refugee Action Collective is proud to host a public forum to challenge the anti-people smuggling rhetoric dominant in Australian politics. Seeking asylum by boat is not a crime. However, those who assist asylum seekers to reach Australia's shores via informal travel arrangements have been systematically demonised by both Labor and Liberal parties. This is backed up by mandatory sentencing laws for anyone found to have participated in people smuggling. Hundreds of poor Indonesian fishers, including dozens of minors, have been jailed for the mandatory 3 years in Australia. The criminalisation of people smuggling, combined with the militarisation of Australia's borders and the impounding and destruction of boats intercepted, is what makes the boat journey to Australia so needlessly dangerous. Speakers: Arnold Zable (award-winning writer and refugee advocate); Sarah Hanson Young (federal Greens senator); lawyer for Indonesian fishermen; Peter Farrago (Refugee Action Collective member and former people-smuggler); Nockie Le (Vietnamese refugee). Multicultural Hub, 506 Elizabeth St, City (opposite Victoria Markets). Small donation welcome.

Public meeting: We owe nothing, We're not selling, we wont pay!
Date: Thu 29 Mar, 7:00pm
In the manufactured 'reality' of the mass media, the problems of the Greek 'debt' crisis are an endless flurry of context-less images of riots, strikes and unrest. Ordinary people in Greece, however, are not taking this collective punishment without a fight. Popular refusal and resistance to the IMF/EU austerity measures have become part of the everyday life of people in Greece; from strikes, occupations and demonstrations to everyday acts of solidarity and collaboration between people in struggle. Forum will include live Skype interviews with participants in these social movements. There will also be music from a 5-piece Rembetika kompania (Greek oriental folk), a short film from the movement against austerity and poetry from Greek-Australian writers. Uniting Church Hall, 251 High Street, Northcote. Concession $4, waged $8, solidarity $12. All proceeds from the night will be sent to support anti-austerity campaigns in Greece.

Public meeting: Psychology, Mental health and Class Society
Date: Sat 31 Mar, 2:00pm
There's no denying that mental illness and various forms of psychological disorders play a massive part in the makeup of modern society. It is important to distinguish between a mental illness and psychological disorder, as the latter is caused by a physical defect in the brain, and would be present in the sufferer regardless of their environmental surroundings and standard of living. However in regards to mental illness how much of the environmental factors and standards of living are taken in to account when sufferers are diagnosed? To what degree are factors like unemployment, homelessness, poverty, not being able to afford the basic necessities of life, social isolation, economic and social inequality, sexism, racism, homophobia/transphobia taken in to account when the diagnoses are performed? Resistance Centre, Level 5, 407 Swanston St, City (opposite RMIT). Organised by Resistance and Socialist Alliance.

Harmony Day 2012
Date: Sun 18 Mar, 12:00pm - Sun 18 Mar, 5:00pm
Enjoy multiculturalism, develop harmony Kardinya Community Centre, Prescot Drive, Kardinya. Free event organised by Ilankai Tamil Sangam of WA

MORE INFO: Ilankai Tamil Sangam is organising Harmony Day Celebrations on 18th March 2012 as its contribution to Celebrate the Harmony Week ending on 21st March 2012. The Flyer for the Event is attached. Please circulate this to all those who are likely to be interested. We are also inviting as many communities as possible to participate as well as to contribute to the success of the event which is intended for all of us to Enjoy Multiculturalism and to Develop Hamony. In order to explain to those who may not be familiar, a short Note on Harmony Day is given below: The Harmony day (21st of March) was declared by the United Nations general assembly to commemorate the tragedy of police killing of 69 people who were taking part in a peaceful protest against the apartheid “pass laws” in the township of Sharpeville in South Africa on 21st March 1960. The day had been dedicated as the International Day for elimination of Racial Discrimination. Western Australia has embraced Harmony Week, a week leading up to 21 March as a time to embrace our diversity and value the benefits it brings. As well as promoting positive community relations, Harmony Week is about saying “no” to racism and discrimination. No doubt that the Harmony Week has very great relevance to the Members of all the Stateless Nations and we need to harmonise with the peoples all over the World who are fighting for Harmony in its broadest sense. More information is available in the website of the Office of Multicultural Interests, Department of Local Government, WA (omi.wa.gov.au).

Wollongong
Coal Seam Gas Community Conference
Date: Sun 25 Mar, 10:00am - Sun 25 Mar, 4:00pm
This community has - so far - halted the plan to develop a gas field in our drinking water catchment. But, unbelieveably given the mounting evidence of the risks, the state government still supports the industry. It's up to us. How will we heard? What are the next steps? Everybody is invited to this community conference to discuss CSG in the Illawarra. Your voice is needed and it will make a difference. Wollongong City Town Hall.

"Australia has the most restrictive media in the western world. Censorship by omission denies Australians their democratic right to make sense of whole stratas of political and foreign policy. That's why Green Left Weekly is a beacon, doing a job of honourable journalism, as an agent of people, not power."
