Recycling organic and green waste (such as kitchen scraps and garden waste) will help address climate change, reduce waste to landfill, reduce waste costs, and improve agricultural soils. So why is the ACT Government still letting all of Canberra’s organic ‘waste’ go into our landfills, where a critical resource is wasted and where it breaks down into damaging greenhouse gases? The ACT Greens have been calling for the recycling of organics. This public forum will explore why we need an organics recycling program as well as how this kind of system should work, touching on the different kinds of technologies and their merits. Two speakers with expertise in waste and soils issues will be discussing these issues. Reception room, Legislative Assembly (front entrance), London Circuit, Civic. Light refreshments provided.

How The West Was Lost - MAIC film night

Date: Mon 8 Nov, 6:30pm

Location New International Bookshop - Trades Hall cnr Lygon and Victoria Streets Join Melbourne Anti-Intervention Collective for a rare screening of the documentary film ‘How The West Was Lost’. In the 1940s in the north-west of Australia, a secret congress was organized by Pilbara Elders Dooley Bin Bin and Clancy McKenna, alongside white unionist and communist Don McLeod. It was an unprecedented gathering, with over a dozen interpreters present to deal with the 23 languages of the many Aboriginal groups pres...ent. This congress decided to organize a strike in the Pilbara region to demand better wages and conditions, and to draw attention to the treatment generally of Aboriginal people in Western Australia. On 1 May 1946, Aboriginal workers walked off the sheep stations, marking the beginning of a carefully organized strike that was to last three years. It is considered one of the most significant (and least known) political actions in Australian history, and went on to inspire the Land Rights movement of the 1960s. Following the screening, we will have discussion about the relationship between unions, workers struggle and Aboriginal rights today. We will also discuss the work that MAIC is doing, and how people can support us.

Why Teachers and Communities are Breaking the Ban on Bilingual Education

Date: Thu 18 Nov, 6:30pm

Australian Education Union and Melbourne Anti Intervention Collective present... A public forum The NT Intervention: Why Teachers and Communities are Breaking the Ban on Bilingual Education ... James Hardie Theatre, Architecture Building, The University of Melbourne Speakers: Senior teacher from Bilingual school (to remain anonymous until video link up) Rosa McKenna, Friends of Bilingual Learning Mary McKernich, Australian Education Union Victorian Secondary Councilor Lucy Honan, Melbourne Anti Intervention Collective. Bans on teaching in Aboriginal language for the first four hours of the school day were introduced in 2008 following the roll out of the Northern Territory Intervention in 2007. Under the guise of “closing the gap” on Aboriginal disadvantage the Racial Discrimination Act was suspended, Aboriginal community land has been seized and community organisations, jobs and access to welfare payments have been dismantled. The attempt to decimate bilingual programs was a territory government decision, but mimics perfectly the punitive logic of the federal intervention. Communities and Aboriginal culture are being attacked for the problems caused by all governments' chronic failure to support programs of self determination for Aboriginal people. These schools are the first casualties of NAPLAN- NAPLAN data from 2008 was used to justify the bans, but as Senator Trish Crossin and Dr Brian Devlin and have shown, the literacy and numeracy data was deliberately misconstrued to suggest bilingual schools were under performing. In fact, there is overwhelming international evidence that bilingual learning is educationally sound, and the closure of the programs is a human rights violation. So what is behind the bilingual bans, why are Aboriginal communities resisting the ban and what we can do?

Songs For The Kimberley No Land Grab – Melbourne group presents:Songs for the Kimberley

Date: Sat 20 Nov, 12:00am

This is a special Melbourne event in the on-going campaign against the Western Australian government’s compulsory acquisition of traditional lands on the Kimberley coast, near Broome W.A. ‘Apart from the obvious environmental impact of this proposed industrialisation, which has been well documented, the significant issue of the preservation of our aboriginal cultural and spiritual heritage, has not been given due consideration. The Law and Song Cycles of Walmadan are not ancient history, but present-day fact. This Law has been kept alive through my grandfather Paddy Roe and now through me. If this threatened development goes ahead, our country is gone forever. Our country holds our Heritage, including our burial sites, and most importantly the Song Cycle that runs through this country from the north of the Dampier Peninsula, south to Bidyadanga, the area below Roebuck Bay. Your voice can draw attention to this great plight and help protect our ancient and sacred Song Cycles – Bugarigaara (Dreamtime). Thank you.’ Joseph Roe Law Keeper and Custodian Northern Tradition, Goolarabooloo People. Saturday the 20th of November 2010, (1pm – 10pm). Venue: ‘J-Studios’ Artists’ Community 100 Barkly Street, North Fitzroy, (between St. Georges Rd & Nicholson St.) Admission: $15 waged, $12 concession, $5 kids, entry on the day.

Date: Wed 10 Nov, 6:30pm

Including welcome to country by Nyoongar Elder Noel Nannup. It looks at Australia’s ongoing policies of paternalism and assimilation, explains the real issues underlying Indigenous disadvantage in this “lucky” country, and upholds the right of First Australians to dignity, culture and empowerment in their own country.” http://www.ourgeneration.org.au/about-2/ Join us on Wednesday 10th of November at the Octagon Theatre, UWA. Doors open at 6.30pm with a Welcome to Country by Nyoongar Elder, Noel Nannup. Protest: Shoe away the war criminals!

Date: Mon 8 Nov, 1:00pm

Robert Gates (Bush-Obama defense secretary and former CIA deputy director) and Hillary Clinton (Obama's secretary of state) will be in Australia for talks with the pro-war Julia Gillard government. Even Gates admits that the US-NATO war and occupation in Afghanistan is not going well. The Revolutionary Assoc of Afghan Women has accused Clinton of lying when she says the Western occupation can continue while the women of Afghanistan are saved. Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that Australia is training militia connected to Uruzgan warlord Matiullah Khan. Perhaps that explains why Afghan president Hamid Kazai praised the PM for working with "warlordy types" when she visited Afghanistan last month. Send a message to Gates, Clinton and Gillard that the troops have to get out of Afghanistan and Iraq ... and bring your spare shoes! Where: Outside US Consulate, Martin Place.

Wollongong

Special pre-selection meeting for Socialist Alliance Illawarra members

Date: Mon 1 Nov, 7:00pm - Mon 1 Nov, 9:00pm

The March 2011 NSW elections are fast approaching and we, Socialist Alliance, need to discuss/decide if and where we run in the Illawarra, e.g. Keira, Wollongong, Heathcote etc. The NSW Labor Party is in utter crisis; people need a strong progressive alternative to both the major parties. Please come along to this important meeting to discuss working with the Greens and Independents and how Socialist Alliance should approach the election. For queries or more information please contact Will on 0425 329 963. Check out the action from our 2010 federal election campaign in Cunningham: http://www.jessmoorecunningham.blogspot.com/ Keep in touch with the branch's campaigns & activities: http://www.socialist-alliance.org/illawarra/

NSW is not for sale! Illawarra SA meeting

Date: Wed 10 Nov, 7:00pm - Wed 10 Nov, 9:00pm

NSW is a state in crisis. The rotten Labor government - corrupt, privatising at will, pursuing a coal-first, environment-last agenda - is likely to be crushed at the March 2011 election. But Barry O'Farrell's Liberal-National Coalition would be even more pro-privatisation, anti-worker and anti-environment. We need real, pro-people and pro-planet solutions. Come to this meeting to help explore the necessary alternatives - from a zero-emissions economy to rights for Indigenous people; from genuine grassroots democracy to public investment in housing & transport. The meeting will also look at how we can win these alternatives - from movements in the streets to radical alternatives in the state elections. ALL WELCOME! Meet local Socialist Alliance candidates too :) Activist Centre, 17/157 Central Chambers Crown St Mall. The Times of Harvey Milk - fantastic doco

Date: Fri 26 Nov, 7:00pm - Fri 26 Nov, 9:00pm

Entry by donation (recommended $5 conc / $8 full). Ph Will 0425 329 963 for more info. Presented by friends of Green Left Weekly. Thirroul Railway Institute, Railway Parade, Thirroul. One of the very best films of the 1980s, The Times of Harvey Milk is an absolutely gripping documentary that works on every level. Informative and balanced, it's also funny and exciting, tragic yet ultimately hopeful. It's one of those tiny handful of movies that's undoubtedly changed many lives. Harvey Milk sat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and was California's first openly gay elected official. The movie opens on November 27, 1978 when Dianne Feinstein, then president of the city's council, made public the chilling news that Milk, along with San Francisco Mayor George Moscone, had been brutally assassinated in their City Hall offices by disgraced former supervisor Dan White.
