Socialist Ideas discussion: Borders, race and class - the politics of immigration

Date: Sat 2 Oct, 2:00pm

John Lennon captured the imagination of millions when he sang "Imagine there's no countries, nothing to kill or die for". Decades on, borders, racism, the refugee situation and immigration are intertwined as the first world rapidly raises fortresses to deny access from the poor south - including from people fleeing wars and dictatorships backed by the first world. The next installment in Socialist Alliance and Resistance's regular fortnightly socialist ideas discussions will look at the root causes behind the issues, and how we can challenge the injustices. Resistance Centre, 23 Abercrombie St, Chippendale

Live Red Art Awards Exhibition & Festival

Date: Sun 17 Oct, 12:30pm - Sun 17 Oct, 8:30pm

The Live Red Art Awards and Festival is a new arts project that seeks to promote and recognize art that investigates a radical social and political perspective. The LRAA promises to be a fearless, inspiring convergence of all those who are interested in the collision of social change and jaw-dropping art. A prize of $3000 (with a people’s choice award of $500) will be awarded to an individual artist or group of artists whose work of art best reflects the motto: “Another world is possible, but we must fight for it”. Entries are open to artists across Australia. A condition of entry is that, regardless of the type of art entered, it must be protest art. It must also be able to be performed, installed or mounted by the entrants at the festival itself — hence the concept of “live red art”. The exhibition/festival will feature art as diverse as: - visual art - performance art - time-based art - photomedia - street art - textiles - theatre There'll also be a zine fair and live music. All the artworks will explore how we can live together in a new way; have the potential of having a mass impact; and aim to inspire social change and raise political awareness. LRAA presents a unique opportunity for local artists and cultural activists who recognise the connection between art, culture, social life and political change. Entries are open now until September 1 - go to the website for more info on how to submit an artwork.

Sydney Uni Resistance presents: Exit through the giftshop

Date: Wed 27 Oct, 1:00pm

Directed by the mysterious "Banksy", Exit Through the Gift Shop is a brilliant examination of the underground street art culture, and an intriguing look at commercialisation of art. The multi-layered film is humorous art itself, poking fun at the "trendiness" of street art, the millionaires who want to purchase it, and revealing the contradictions of the art form. The discussion Gillard & Abbott don't want: AFGHANISTAN - What will happen if the troops come out?

Date: Thu 28 Oct, 6:00pm

Speakers include Hadi Zaher, Afghan refugee & anti-war campaigner; Helen Patterson, activist in Stop the War & Socialist Alliance. \After nine years of war and occupation tens of thousands of Afghan civilians are dead and more than 2000 US-led troops – including 21 Australians – have been killed. Billions of dollars are being spent while the world slides into economic crisis. Bipartisan support from the ALP and the Coalition has meant there has been no real debate on Australia's role. Supporters of the war insist the war is necessary to fight terrorism and bring democracy to Afghanistan. Yet a clear majority (61% according to Essential Poll) is opposed to Australian involvement. Newly elected independent MP, Andrew Wilkie argues “there can be no hope of enduring peace until foreign troops are withdrawn.” Organised by Socialist Alliance & Green Left Weekly Resistance Centre, 23 Abercrombie St, Chippendale (cnr Blackfriars). Dinner from 6pm, meeting 6:30pm.

Socialist Ideas discussion: From burqa bans to raunch culture - the struggle for women's liberation today

Date: Sat 30 Oct, 2:00pm - Sat 30 Oct, 4:00pm

While forces from Fred Nile through to some on the Left call for "banning the burqa" for supposed liberation, just how emancipated are 21st century Australian women? Women do most of the unpaid work in the home; earn just 66% of the male wage; lack affordable child care; 1-in-4 suffer domestic violence; abortion remains illegal in most states; and problems such as poverty disproportionately effect women. On top of and reinforcing this, a massive industry of sexist media and advertising turns women into nothing more than commodities. A new aspect of this is "raunch culture", which promotes itself as liberating women's sexuality. Come to a discussion on women in 21st century Australia, from the burqa hysteria to raunch culture, and how we need to confront sexism as part of the struggle for a better world. The latest in a regular series of Socialist Ideas discussions hosted by Socialist Alliance and Resistance. All welcome! Resistance Centre, 23 Abercrombie St, Chippendale
