Perth Prochoice Speakout

Date: Fri 8 Oct, 8:30pm

Speak-out in solidarity with Cairns couple charged under Qld anti-abortion laws. Demand drop the charges! Repeal anti-abortion laws in every state! For free, safe, accessible abortion on demand! Murray St mall (William St end), Perth CBD. MORE INFO This action is linked to the national day of action (NDA) to support the Cairns couple charged under Queensland's outdated criminal laws. A growing list of organisations is supporting the NDA. (See the list at http://www.prochoiceactionqld.org/?page_id=416). Events are being planned in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, with a vigil in Cairns from October 11 for the duration of the trial. Details at http://www.prochoiceactionqld.org/?page_id=409. The demands of the speakout mirror the national demands, and include a call for repealing the anti-abortion laws in all states – reflecting that abortion is still a criminal offence in some states, and that even where it has been decriminalised it is subjected to regulations that restrict women’s access, and which in general still make it illegal for a woman to attempt to take or do anything herself to abort a pregnancy. See http://www.greenleft.org.au/events/45479 to get involved in helping to organise the action.

Global Financial Crisis: Is it over? Or is the worst to come?

Date: Sun 24 Oct, 2:00pm

Socialist Ideas Seminar with q&a by Barry Healy & Elliot Herrington. Perth Activist Centre, 15 / 5 Aberdeen St, East Perth (next to McIver station). Free entry. MORE INFO: The Global Financial Crisis feels like it came out of thin air. The mainstream media talk of it as an aberration in the normal operations of capitalism. Politicians talk about “the recovery” as though the worst is already behind us. Is any of that true? What if the GFC is just the latest in a series of bigger or smaller shocks that have dogged capitalism from its outset because there are inherent faults in the way the system operates? What if “the recovery” is as phoney as the weapons of mass destruction that justified the invasion of Iraq? The crisis has not hit Australia as hard as other countries – will that last? To get to grips with these issues we need to take a long view of history and examine capitalism from its birth to what could be its death agony.
