Where to for refugee rights after the election?

Date: Sat 11 Sep, 2:00pm

Speakers include: David Shoebridge (Greens candidate, NSW state election); Nick Riemer (Refugee Action Coalition); Anti-deportation Alliance speaker; Amnesty speaker We await the shape of the next government, after an election campaign that was a sickening race to the bottom on refugee policy between Tony Abbott and Julia Gillard. Neither major party has a mandate for refugee bashing. The party gaining the strongest swing was The Greens, who stood up for refugee rights. The breakout by Afghan detainees at Darwin detention centre, following protests by Indonesian fishermen who are unfairly being charged with "people smuggling", show that the issue is not going away. There are now around 3000 people in detention as a result of the visa freeze, in places including Curtin detention centre, which means the protests inside detention are likely to continue. This forum will discuss the election result and what it means for refugee rights over the next three years. Sydney Uni, New Law building room 100, (enter main City Rd entrance, look for signs) Organised by Refugee Action Coalition

Film screening: Exit through the gift shop

Date: Sat 25 Sep, 6:30pm

Directed by the mysterious artist "Banksy", Exit Through the Gift Shop is a brilliant examination of the underground street art culture, and an intriguing commentary on the commercialisation of art. Through the video camera of a French immigrant living in Los Angeles, we search for and ultimately find street artists Space Invader, Shepard Fairey, Banksy and others, providing a personal view of a shadowy culture. In bizarre ways the film deals with the "trendiness" of street art, the millionaires who want to purchase Banksy and other artist's work, and the contradictions and potential sellouts that it brings. A film that will fascinate and surprise you, with the real meaning seeming almost as elusive as Banksy himself. Donation entry $10/6. Dinner available from 6pm. A special screening in support of the Live Red Arts Awards, organised by Green Left Weekly Resistance Centre, 23 Abercrombie St (Cnr Blackfriars St), Chippendale.
