Injustice Queensland Style: Learning the lessons from Palm Island

Date: Tue 24 Aug, 12:00am

Injustice Queensland Style: Learning the lessons from Palm Island! It’s almost six years since the death in custody on Palm Island of Mulrunji whose “crime” was to comment on an arrest, sing a song and continue on his way when told to do so. What happened is now well known - a coronial inquiry found that police officer, Chris Hurley, struck Mulrinji with such force, the blow was fatal. Hurley received compensation and a promotion while well respected community leader, Lex Wotton, was jailed. After 19 months behind bars, Lex is now free, but politically muzzled. Lex had extraordinary parole conditions imposed; he is banned from speaking to the media or a public meetings! Come to a meeting to discuss the truth the state of Queensland wants buried! Join the campaign to lift the gag on Lex. Speakers: Solidarity greeting from Palm Island sister, Naomi Prior Tamar Hopkins, Flemington Kensington Community Legal Service Mary Micallef, for the Indigenous Social Justice Association Other speakers TBC Solidarity Salon, 580 Sydney Rd, Brunswick Hearty snacks served. Dunds will be collected to benefit Lex Wotton and his family. Hosted by Indigenous Social Justice Association - Melbourne. PO Box 308, Brunswick VIC 3056.
