BRITAIN: Voters want distance from Bush

17 November 1993

An opinion poll conducted by ISM research found that 63% of British voters believe the British government should break from its current position of subservience to the US administration. The findings of the poll were published in the July 25 London Guardian. Discontent over Blair’s refusal to back calls for an immediate ceasefire in the Israel-Lebanon conflict has been rising steadily. According to the Guardian, only 22% of those polled didn’t think that Israel’s reaction to the situation was disproportionate. The July 26 Morning Star reported that 14 organisations, including Amnesty International, Save the Children, the Muslim Council of Britain and the public sector union UNISON, had signed an open letter condemning Blair’s failure to back an immediate ceasefire. An open letter sponsored by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and the Stop the War coalition is also garnering widespread support. To sign on visit <http://www.stopwar.org.uk/lebanon/sign.php>.
