BRITAIN: Lecturers vote for Israeli boycott

27 April 2005

On April 22, the British Association of University Teachers voted to boycott two Israeli universities — Haifa and Bar Ilans — because of their failure to speak out against the Israeli government’s attacks on Palestine. The boycott will follow a plan proscribed by a group of 60 Palestinian academic and cultural bodies, which calls for academics to sever links with Israeli institutions, exempting those individuals and organisations that speak out against the brutal occupation of Palestine. A motion to boycott Hebrew university was deferred, after queries were raised about the claim that it evicted Palestinians to build dormitories. Some delegates complained that insufficient time was given to opposition to the boycott in the debate.
