Melbourne M1 Alliance launched

8 November 2000

BY JORGE JORQUERA

MELBOURNE — On November 1 a meeting of the S11 Alliance in Melbourne decided to support as a “global strike” against corporate tyranny on May 1, 2001. This meeting of the alliance had been called with the specific intent of discussing future initiatives after the success of S11.

Discussion at the meeting focused on how the alliance could draw in and work with as many forces as possible for M1. The meeting agreed that as with S11 itself, the alliance had to take the initiative and put it to the trade unions and other organisations to participate however they saw fit.

There was also agreement that the M1 Alliance would organise a determined mass action like the blockade of the World Economic Forum meeting in Melbourne on September 11-13.

There is an understanding among S11 activists that the global movement that is developing against neoliberalism needs forceful action to rally the young activists that are currently spearheading the movement. The M1 Alliance has decided to target a major corporate target, to be determined, for the May 1 action.

The M1 Alliance will be publicly launched at a November 11 left conference in Melbourne. The next organising meeting of the M1 Alliance will be on Wednesday November 15, 6.30pm at the RMIT Lesley Clucas Lounge.
