Help needed to overcome arson attack

By Iggy Kim

PERTH -- In October, the home of well-known Aboriginal activist Clarrie Isaacs was severely burnt in a suspected arson attack. The fire melted light fittings and electrical wiring throughout the house. The quick action of a neighbour prevented more serious damage.

The blaze completely destroyed office equipment and sensitive records collected over many years of fighting government and police injustices against Aborigines. Signs of forced entry were clearly evident.

Isaacs is disliked by the WA establishment for his leading role in the campaign against the old Swan Brewery redevelopment. As a justice of the peace who helps numerous working people negotiate the capitalist legal system, he is a thorn in the establishment's side.

Since the fire, supporters have donated money and worked every morning to help restore Isaacs' house. A fundraising dance on January 30 raised $400. Despite the significant progress so far, more voluntary labour and financial assistance is required.

Anyone able to help should phone Stuart Sherlock on (08) 9247 2481.
