Congratulations on reaching 700 editions. GLW is a candle in the dark of Australias current political scene. I look forward to the 7000th edition, in which you might look back on the conviction of Howard, Ruddock and Downer as they languish in prison for war crimes and crimes against humanity (see Commonwealth Criminal Code part 268; think Iraq, think indefinite mandatory detention). Very best wishes.
- Julian Burnside QC
Green Left Weekly has become the best source of news about industrial struggles, local politics and international politics. This is particularly true of the coverage of events in Latin America, especially Venezuela, where exciting challenges and alternatives to the conservative political agenda are emerging.
Green Left is important in an era where most media is controlled by vested interests supporting the status quo. Workers need and deserve a press that puts their side of the story. I congratulate Green Left on its 700th issue, and I feel sure that the good work will continue in our upcoming struggles.
- John Cleary
Electrical Trades Union
Victoria
Green Left Weekly provides an invaluable service to the Australian public by conveying information and a perspective on events not available through the corporate media. Congratulations and thank you for what I have learnt over the years though GLW.
- Colin Mitchell
Civil Rights Defence activist
Green Left Weekly has played a crucial role from the very beginning of Union Solidaritys fight-back against Work Choices and the Building Industry Improvement Act. Not just reportage, but support in a national weekly newspaper has been crucial to our success! Helping us mobilise people for the community assemblies and explaining why we do what we do has meant so much for our fighters. Importantly, assisting us to build a depth and breadth into our organisation, will always be remembered. Thank you.
- Dave Kerin
Union Solidarity
Just wanted to say how refreshing it is to read informative, objective and honest publishing in the form of Green Left Weekly. Global as well as local issues are reported as well as arts, music and literature and a calender of events happening in your own capital city what a feast. I feel Green Left Weekly provides the nourishment one needs to survive in our current capitalist society. I look forward to the next issue/issues of GLW.
- Jakalene X
Aboriginal activist & Socialist Alliance NSW election candidate
GLW was the only newspaper that told the truth about the Howard governments royal commission into building industry unions and about Work Choices. We thank GLW for their unwavering support for the CFMEU.
- Martin Kingham
Construction, Forestry, Mining & Energy Union Victorian secretary
Green Lefts 700th issue is a milestone for the paper and the many people who have contributed to it over the years. It highlights the strong community support for independent media that covers important issues without being influenced by government, owners or advertisers.
In a country where our prime minister has spent the last decade attacking the rights of workers, refugees, Indigenous Australians, the poor and anyone who dares criticise his policies, alternative media outlets such as Green Left Weekly have an essential role educating and campaigning for a just and fair society.
As a community we are increasingly suffering the effects of a capitalist society driven by the greed of big business. Green Left provides an avenue for highlighting that another world is possible, based on equality, decency, fairness and community.
Keep up the good work, remain a focal point of community dissent against our current government, and keep acting as a beacon of hope for the future.
- Andrew Ferguson
CFMEU NSW secretary
Green Left keeps me informed about what is really going on in the world, and plays a part in furthering the struggle for womens liberation by reporting on and providing analysis of feminist issues. Congratulations on 700 issues of GLW, and heres to another 700.
- Clare Middlemas
Womens officer
Murdoch University
The vigorous scrutiny that GLW provides over the government and all its agencies is its great strength.
The fact that GLW makes comment without fear or favour is also its great strength. It was very early in the piece that GLW took up the cases of David Hicks and Jack Thomas when very few others would defend them. It was very early in the piece when GLW questioned the governments war on terrorism.
Thank god that GLW isnt dependent on government funding because that means that GLW can speak out without fear or favour and call the situation as it is.
GLW also provides an alternative vision of the community by examining other social systems. Ive become a great fan of Hugo Chavez through having access to GLW and GLWs coverage of the revolutionary process that is happening in Venezuela, Bolivia and other parts of Latin America. It gives me inspiration.
- Rob Stary
Civil liberties lawyer
GLW is a vital communication link between unionists across the country and between unionists in different industries, which we need to swap our experiences.
The mainstream media usually distorts industrial disputes whereas GLW is a true representation of workers struggles. GLW has a perspective that never finds its way into the mainstream media.
- Chris Spindler
AMWU organiser
Victoria
Green Left Weekly has become increasingly important for the community, unions and those people who really want to understand what is going on. The ETU wishes Green Left Weekly all power in the future.
- Dean Mighell
Secretary
Electrical Trades Union
Southern States Branch
GLW has been a consistently progressive commentator in a country that is dominated by conservative media. Workers appreciate the efforts of GLW to cover issues from a progressive point of view.
- Steve Dargavel
Secretary

The Eelam Tamil Association Victoria (Inc) would like to congratulate the management and staff of Green Left Weekly for their great achievement in releasing the 700th edition. The Green Left Weekly has been a very good friend of the Tamils in Australia over the years. It has published articles which brought to the forefront the just struggle of the Tamils in the north-east of Sri Lanka to gain freedom and peace and live with dignity.
On behalf of the Eelam Tamil Association Victoria (Inc), I would like to extend my best wishes to Green Left Weekly and hope that it will continue its good work.
- M Sivakumar
president
Eelam Tamil Association Victoria (Inc)
700 and still standing! Keep going GLW, in an age of newspeak we need alternative media more than ever. Best wishes.
- Tim Anderson
Activist and university lecturer
Bravo Green Left Weekly on producing the 700th issue. As someone who has written about the campaigns of the womens movement and more recently education issues, I know only too well how invaluable the GLW newspaper is. I am very proud to be associated with a newspaper that boldly and consistently presents a left-wing, indeed a Marxist viewpoint and which fearlessly stands on the side of working Australians, not the parasitic ruling class.
- Mary Merkenich
AEU state councillor
and Teachers Alliance member
Congratulations to Green Left Weekly on reaching the 700 milestone a massive achievement for an independent publication in difficult times. Over the years GLW has played an important role in reporting and supporting community action for a nuclear-free Australia. By telling the stories from the frontlines of the Jabiluka blockade and other anti-uranium and nuclear dump campaigns and through keeping a close eye on the boardrooms and the positioning of our biggest miners and most compliant politicians, GLW has been an important watchdog of an increasingly rabid industry. May your bark, bite and presses roll for 700 more!
- Dave Sweeney
Nuclear campaigner
Australian Conservation Foundation
Green Left has for decades provided a view other than that of the corporate media, in which issues vital to human survival such as nuclear disarmament and peace can be discussed.
Green Lefts coverage of developments in Latin America and the Middle East is a vital corrective to the partial and downright biased coverage that led us into the war with Iraq and that threatens to lead us into a catastrophic war with Iran.
As Friends of the Earth Australias nuclear weapons campaigner and as a participant in the wider disarmament and peace movement, I can say that Green Left Weekly fills a vital role that no other paper or magazine in this country fills.
- John Hallam
Friends of the Earth
Its an amazing record of commitment to presenting alternative viewpoints an essential part of our democracy, and much needed in these days of increasing media monopolisation.
Thanks to the dedicated staff over all those years.
- Jo Vallentine
People for Nuclear Disarmament
Western Australia
Over 700 issues, Green Left Weekly has chipped away at the lies, distortions and silences of this countrys corporate media. The apoplectic reactions it regularly provokes from the Andrew Bolts and Gerard Hendersons show just how well it has been doing that job, and its not difficult to imagine how much weaker and isolated the socialist, left and progressive movements would be without it. For the Socialist Alliance, the collaboration with Green Left has been invaluable in helping build all campaigns for a socially just and sustainable world.
- Dick Nichols
National coordinator
Socialist Alliance
In a time and age where the truth is censored in order to strengthen the rule of capitalism, Green Left Weekly represents the voice of those who are exploited and oppressed all over the world. It is also the voice of the people who resist against injustice. No matter how strong imperialism and fascism might seem, people who are organised, people who resist are always stronger.
We thank Green Left for contributing to the recent victory of the seven-year-long death fast (hunger strikes) resistance of the revolutionary socialists in Turkey against prison isolation and for playing an important role in breaking down the dark cloud of media censorship. The victory is all of ours!
We would like to congratulate Green Left Weekly for being the voice of revolution for 700 weeks and hope that it will continue in its path for many more years to come.
- TAYAD Committee
(Solidarity with Political Prisoners)
Australia
Without Green Left Weekly life would be grim in Australia indeed. We balance on the edge of losing our freedom all the time. So Green Left Weekly is essential reading if you really want to know whats going on.
- Shirley Shackleton
Human rights activist, still campaigning for justice for the Balibo 5
Congratulations to GLW, the only paper that tells the truth.
- John Doran
Victorian president
Electrical Trades Union
Congratulations to GLW on its 700th edition. GLW is the only voice for workers and their organisations. GLW is the only paper that reveals the truth. I hope theres another 7000 editions of GLW.
- Craig Johnston
CFMEU delegate
& former AMWU Victorian secretary
Congratulations on the 700th issue. GLW provides unfettered reporting of union issues. All power to GLW.
- Brendan Murphy
CFMEU organiser
Victoria
Congratulations to Green Left Weekly on your 700th issue. GLW has always been a staunch defender of the rights of asylum seekers. The movement for refugee rights has benefited from your commitment. GLW has publicised all the main issues of the campaign. It has promoted its forums and public meetings, and its demonstrations whether in major cities or outside remote detention centres. GLW has given a voice to asylum seekers where it could. It has also given a voice to those who remained intransigent against mandatory detention in any form whatsoever. Thanks for your support. Good luck for the next 700.
- Tony Dewberry
Refugee-rights activist
Melbourne
All those who have contributed to both past and present editions of the Green Left Weekly deserve heartfelt congratulations and thanks for their contribution to, and participation in, the struggle to provide fundamental and often concealed truths about the state of Australia and Australians. Your role in the battle for recognition of and support for those who dont fit John Howards Australia remains vitally important.
It is also refreshing to have a more compassionate and principled view of world affairs than that offered by the corporate media. Seven hundred issues is an enormous milestone.
Congratulations and keep up the fight, especially, your efforts to raise awareness of the workers struggle in regional areas. In the country areas, we are generally overlooked and its heartening to see our stories and issues recognised and publicised.
- Margaret Donehue
Secretary
South West Trades & Labour Council
Victoria
To all those at Green Left Weekly who work so tirelessly on getting out such a quality newspaper, week in, week out, we at The Conch congratulate you on your 700th issue. Your contribution to the radical and socialist movements have been invaluable and as far as we can see, has very few peers, worldwide! It has inspired many of our songs, especially about the reactionary Howard government and the radicalisation thats taking place in Latin America, and it has been a thorn in the side of all the neoliberal projects that have so devastated our world.
Its kind of ironic that of all the places with the most monopolised media in the world, Australia has its Green Left Weekly. Thanks again, keep up the great work.
- The Conch
Global warming, drought, bushfire and other environmental issues are now mainstream. But it is still rare to get in-depth reporting that doesnt just deliver glib solutions like clean coal or nuclear power or emissions trading. In contrast to much of the mainstream media, GLW digs deeper into the issues and reveals solutions that are based on human
rights, not just market mechanisms. They are to be applauded for helping keep independent media strong over so many years and for taking a human rights and international approach to environmental issues.
- Cam Walker
Friends of the Earth Australia
On behalf of the Bougainville Freedom Movement, I would like to congratulate the Green Left Weekly in marking the 700th issue of their newspaper. For many years you have covered the stories that need to be told and read about, something mainstream media often fails to do. May your wonderful work continue for many years to come!
- Vikki John
Bougainville Freedom Movement
The 700th edition of the GLW is a statement to the dedication and hard work of countless activists that have contributed to it for all these years.
It is as important as ever today to have progressive and alternative media outlets in Australia that can give a different interpretation to the facts as reported in the corporate media. May you continue to prosper. Well done comrades.
- Piergiorgio Moro
Chairperson
3CR Radio
Congratulations on the 700th issue of Green Left Weekly the only paper that gives a working class perspective in Australia. We look forward to supporting the paper for many more years.

Congratulations to the many thousands of people, from sellers to writers and editors, who are responsible for this substantial achievement. There will no doubt be many comments on GLWs coverage, so I will direct my special admiration to those who do the hard work on the streets, markets, stations, universities and other workplaces. Without the sellers it wouldnt happen. Well done!
- Jamie Doughney
Victorian President
National Tertiary Education Union
Former editor, Direct Action 1981-82
Congratulations to GLW for its massive achievement over the past 700 issues. It has been the primary source of progressive news in Australia and has consistently provided us with alternative information and perspectives. In view of the increasing problems facing us, especially global inequalities and climate change, GLW will continue to be a very important source of alternative news as well as an organising focus for the changes that will be required.
Keep it up for at least another 700 issues!
- Harry van Moorst
Western Region Environment Centre
In our current political and social climate, the constant attacks on the two national public broadcasters SBS and the ABC by the Howard government, and also what I consider the very inappropriate placements on the governing boards of the two broadcasters, has resulted in the erosion of the quality of on-air content and in particular news and current affairs.
This added to the lack of accountability of right-wing biases in the commercial media sets a very dangerous precedent for the democratic process and freedom of speech.
GLW along with other independent publications has been and continues to be a shining light in the dissemination of extremely important information. This combined with its tenacious vigour in discussing and more importantly challenging current social and political situations that directly affect every Australian, such as the tragic Palm Island death in police custody and David Hickss detention in a US gulag is to be commended. Well done comrades!
- Greg Fryer
Indigenous activist & trade unionist
Green Left is one of the few avenues left in print in an otherwise media barren/baron desolate Australia that gives us insight into the real agendas of our political masters and vested interests. Its crucial at this time that a newspaper like Green Left continues to survive and keep us informed of whats really going on. Congrats for staying in business so long. Its not easy to be truly independent out here.
- David Bradbury
Independent film maker
Congratulations on making it to issue 700. Its been a long hard road but the only alternative is to cave in to the rich racist groups who nightly pray, or is it prey, for your demise. I enjoy the diversity of left and non-mainstream analysis contained within your pages. Australia needs Green Left to help balance the Macker/Perdock media menace. Hope Im still around to read your next 700 editions.
- John Tomlinson
Congratulations on 700 issues of lively analysis and campaigning that gives a refreshing voice to the silenced majority whose views are routinely ignored, trivialised, patronised or suppressed by those in the corporate world and its branch offshoots in parliament and media.
If we want to sort out the nuclear spivs from the true friends of the earth, to sort out the lying rhetoric of the media-hogging voices from the class interests they serve, dont expect it from the frothing shock jocks of the gutter stirring up division and hatred, or the loftier mouthpieces of safe opinion wrapping themselves in flag and khaki, or the barren debates of our parliamentary propagandists for corporate power, or the fetishists of balance in the state media whose boundaries of debate admit none but the apologists and managers of the capitalist order.
There are solutions to war, to environmental ruin, to lives blighted by corporate power and greed. There are answers to capitalism. The future will be green and left, or not at all. GLW is helping to make that future. Thank you to all who have got GLW this far lets keep it going!
- Phil Shannon
Congratulations to the Green Left Weekly team on producing such a valuable organising and information-sharing tool! I hope the next 700 issues are as relevant and interesting! Regards and solidarity.
- Elena Garcia
Captain Creek
It is so rare in todays corporate world of journalism to find an honest journalist who questions the truth spouted by politicians and the corporate world. Keep up your critical analysis for another 700 editions and more.
- Dr Colin Hughes
Western Australia
Congratulations and ongoing support for GLW providing down to earth, credible news information on world and domestic events and political developments, reports not otherwise accessible in the corporate-run mass media.
All the best to GLW in keeping up the good work.
- Barbara Grant-Curtis
A near permanent subscriber since the late 1970s era of GLWs precursor, Direct Action
Port Macquarie, NSW
Based on almost 30 years of revolutionary socialist practical activism (since completing by 1978 a social work degree at UNSW), this contributor, subscriber and promoter continues to recognise GLW (even more than with its forerunner, Direct Action) as an invaluable, vital communication and organising tool in our eternal collective work to build Socialist Alliance and advance toward making this aboriginal, migrant and working-class land part of a new socialist world
- Gary Walters
Port Macquarie, NSW
Green Left Weekly is a breath of impartial fresh air in an otherwise convoluted, highly polluted, biased, fabricated, surreal landscape. Here is hoping for its multiplied success and expansive reach.
- Keysar Trad
Islamic Friendship Association of Australia
Congratulations on keeping the Green Left Weekly going for 700 issues. True democracy depends on the availability of information from all sides of the political spectrum. Your paper delivers part of this important function, by being the only paper with strong left perspectives which is readily available on the streets of Sydney, thanks to your dedicated sellers. I particularly enjoy reading your industrial news and excellent coverage of the growing socialist movement in Latin America!
- Phil Bradley
NSW Teachers Federation
Congratulations and thanks to the GLW journalists and team, whose integrity and commitment provide such a walloping and incisive newspaper. Tracing critical issues in Australia barely covered in mainstream media and with detailed reporting of world affairs, its a great springboard to a wide range of sources and movements. Dont stop!
- Helen Pusenjak
Congratulations on a paper that not only provides the only alternative news nationally but is also the only national newspaper that supports the trade union movement. As well as providing news, GLW endeavours to help organise workers to defend their rights.
I hope that there will be another 700 issues of GLW to come.
- Tim Gooden
Secretary
Geelong Trades Hall
For me, GLW is a vital element of our print media and I value my subscription. The breadth of opinion and interpretation in the mainstream papers always was pretty narrow but these days their articles seem almost indistinguishable. GLW provides fresh and quite different perspectives on political developments that keep us from becoming ideological robots. Like second and third trig points in navigation, GLW helps us see more clearly where we are and where were going. The NTEU covers university and some TAFE staff; contemplating many opinions is a point of honour! So, congratulations on your 700th issue I look forward to the 1400th.
- Neil Mudford
ACT division secretary
National Tertiary Education Union
Green Left is a great read for working people. Its written by working people with an emphasis on industrial and political struggles by working people.
- Fergal Eiffe
Organiser
Australian Manufacturing Workers Union
Victoria
Congratulations to the editor and Green Left helpers and sellers for passing the 700th edition milestone in publishing Green Left. It is hoped that more people will receive and read Green Left in future years as it is one of a very few progressive publications in the world that tells the truth about what is really happening on the Australian and international political and social landscapes.
- Christine & Thomas Gleeson
Green Left readers
700 Green Left Weeklys! That is amazing. While the big papers are swimming in money, GLW does on a shoestring what they cannot manage real coverage of our region and our world. Thanks especially for your East Timor coverage, and your magnificent front pages.
- Stephen Langford
East Timor solidarity activist
Being a Muslim activist I think the Green Left Weekly opened my eyes on more issues around the world that I personally did not know of.
Green Left Weekly supports human rights and denounces racism. The coverage over the war in Lebanon, the war in Iraq and the occupation in Palestine clearly demonstrates that GLW supports human rights around the world, no matter where you come from or what background you belong to.
This newspaper is more than a paper, it is facts that I think all the Australian public has to have access to so they would leave their ignorant ideas behind and move along living in a civilised and multicultural society that does not suffer from racism, discrimination and prejudiced ideas.
There is no harm in trying to get in a government that actually fights for its civilians rights and not for George Bushs rights, a government that actually follows something called freedom of speech and a government that does believe in democracy and that is implementing it.
- Salam El-Merebi
Brisbane
Congrats on getting to the 700th issue. I reckon you/we have come a long way in 16 years. In line with Herman & Chomskys take on the role of the mainstream media in the manufacture of consent, we really need alternative media like GLW, and Democracy Now (Monday to Friday, 9-10am, 88.9 FM, Sydney), etc.
If we are to build a better world, the most important thing is to pull yourselves up by your own hair, to turn yourselves inside out, and see the world with fresh eyes (Peter Weiss).
Rather than steadying a leaking and rotten boat, we can use our media to help rock it. Hey! If more folks join us, we can help sink it!
- Peter McGregor
Newcastle
Congratulations and a big thank you to all involved! I loved selling GLWs in Armidale, NSW, and saw it as one of my contributions in the struggle for socialism until I moved to Zurich last September.
And I am very happy that the New England branch of Socialist
Alliance was established last year and took over distribution of the paper.
Now my weekly copy keeps me informed about whats going on
at home.
- Bea Bleile
As an observer of civil rights in the age of anti-terrorism, Im aware that theres no rival to the on-the-ground coverage of ordinary Australians struggle to maintaining the right to protest, dissent and change society.

We send a fraternal and revolutionary greeting on behalf of the FMLN Committees in Australia. We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you on your success arriving at the 700th edition of Green Left Weekly, a solidarity and information tool which is very important to peoples in struggle all around the world.
We send our admiration and a fraternal acknowledgment. Because freedom of expression is the right of the people.
- Ricardo Martinez & Giovanni Ortiz

It is with great pleasure to hear that the Green left Weekly is getting to the 700th, on behalf the National Liberation Front Farabundo Marti of El Salvador (FMLN), Melbourne section, I would like to congratulate you and your hard working team. Your work is fantastic and congratulations on this important achievement!
- Salvador Nunez
FMLN, Melbourne
Congratulations to the GLW on its 700th issue. It is so important for those of us on the left that we have this voice of sanity, telling us how things really are. Thank goodness we do not have to rely on the mainstream Australian media for coverage of, for example, South America. Your stories and analyses on Cuba, Venezuela, Bolivia, etc. have been first class. Heres to the next 700!
- Professor Gavin Mooney
East Fremantle
This paper brought me my political awakening. I began to see how issues
of social justice relating to refugees, workers, women, gays, Koories
and workers were interrelated, and that we don't need the current
economic system improved we need an improved system based on caring,
sharing, struggling together in short democratic socialism, rather than
one based on economic Darwinism, of selfishness, taking, fear, hoarding,
and destroying that is capitalism.
- Luke Weyland
