BRIEF
Greens mayor: ‘Save our ferries’

Kerry Smith
4 November 2009

SYDNEY — Leichhardt Council, and Greens mayor Jamie Parker, will host a public meeting on November 7 to show support for Sydney Ferries against a state government proposal to privatise the service.

Many residents rely on ferry services for transport to and from the city. The council expressed its opposition to the plan and said it would simply lead to more private cars on the road. It also unanimously resolved to write to the state premier, local member and transport minister outlining its concerns.

Leichhardt Council plans to join forces with the Maritime Union of Australia in a community campaign to stop the privatisation.

Speakers at the meeting will include former Builders Labourers Federation secretary Jack Mundey, Balmain Ferries staff and local commuters. Local Labor MP Verity Firth, a supporter of the privatisation process, has also been invited to attend.
