BRIEF
Western Sahara independence struggle commemorated

Kerry Smith
23 May 2009

SYDNEY — On May 15, the Australia Western Sahara Association (AWSA) organised an event at Leichhardt Town Hall to mark the beginning of the struggle for independence in Western Sahara 36 years ago.

A series of documentary films where screened. The feature film was “Cubarawi Women” — a film about Saharawis who spent time studying in Cuba on a free scholarship.

The meeting was addressed by Greens mayor of Leichhardt Jamie Parker. He said the council was pleased to raise the Saharawi republic flag this year as an expression of solidarity and support to the Saharawi people.
