Australia Post delegate reinstated

Margarita Windisch, Melbourne
27 September 2008

Following a strike by Dandenong mail officers in June and an overnight picket by Union Solidarity in September, Australia Post has agreed to reinstate Communications, Electrical and Plumbing Union delegate Hemma Lorenz to her original position. The campaign was triggered by Australia Post’s decision to transfer Lorenz to a city facility.

Joan Doyle, Victorian Communication Workers’ Union secretary, told Green Left Weekly that the strike had meant no mail went out the next day, and the picket also significantly delayed mail.

While the union and Australia Post have settled their differences, the Australian Industrial Relations Commission has ordered all mail workers and drivers not to engage in industrial action for a period of four months. “ We are disappointed that [the AIRC] has issued these orders to the workers and will certainly appeal the decision”, Doyle said.
