Struggle against pulp mill continues

Anthea Stutter, Launceston
24 August 2008

Approximately 10,000 people rallied at Launceston City Park on August 23 in opposition to Gunns’ proposed pulp mill.

The rally and march was organized by Tasmanians Against the Pulp Mill (TAP). The crowd heard from Fiona Newson from the Aboriginal Land and Sea Council, who said that the mill threatens to destroy her people’s cultural heritage and traditional lands.

Other speakers included Gardening Australia presenter Peter Cundall on behalf of TAP, former resource, planning and development committee member Dr Warwick Raverty and indepedent MLC Terry Martin.

Dr Phillip Pullinger from Environment Tasmania told the crowd that his organisation and three Tamar Valley business owners had mounted a legal challenge to the Tasmanian government’s assessment of the Gunn’s pulp mill in the Supreme Court and encouraged particpants to give their financial support.

Gabby Forward and Stef Gebbi from Students Against the Pulp Mill also spoke, urging participants to continue the struggle for a more just world.
