APEC laws to be made permanent

Dale Mills, Sydney
14 March 2008

Laws that curtailed civil liberties during the “extraordinary” and “temporary” conditions of the APEC protests last year in Sydney are likely to be made permanent, according to the March 12 Sydney Morning Herald.

The proposal to put in place the extra powers will potentially affect every protest held in Sydney. The report was tabled in Parliament on March 10 by the police minister, David Campbell, and NSW Attorney-General John Hatzistergos.

The proposal includes making permanent powers relating to locking-down areas, giving police extensive stop and search powers and putting people on an “excluded persons” list.
