The federal budget includes a multi-million package of extra spending on "security" during coming years, according to media releases from the attorney-general's department.

$35.7 million additional funding has been allocated to "national security and counter-terrorism", including for the implementation of control orders against people such as David Hicks, when he is released.

Another $20 million over two years will fund government scare tactics <197> sorry, "the ongoing national security public information campaign", while a further $7.7 million over four years will fund "counter-terrorism exercise" programs.

According to Attorney-General Philip Ruddock, "Part of the $20.5 million in funding for the AFP [Australian Federal Police] will allow expansion of existing Joint Counter Terrorism Teams and ensure that people who are the subject of a control order can be properly monitored".
