Climate change roadshow

Kerry Smith
13 January 2007

The “Climate Change, Despair and Empowerment” roadshow, which will tour the east coast of Australia from January to March, is based on the highly successful “Endangered Species” roadshow organised by the Rainforest Information Centre in the run-up to the 2003 NSW state election.

The climate change roadshow assumes that those attending have seen the film An Inconvenient Truth, are somewhat aware of current news and are among the 93% of Australians that CSIRO research has found are concerned about the issue of global warming. Its aims include to raise awareness; unveil the false, “business as usual” solutions touted by the major political parties, such as nuclear power, “clean coal” and carbon sequestration; and catalyse and support grassroots climate study/action groups.

The roadshow also aims to transform the hopeless despair that many people feel into effective action using the “despair and empowerment” work of Joanna Macy and the “Climate Change, Despair and Empowerment” presentation given in the US by John Seed with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Ross Gelbspan.

The roadshow will visit Coffs Harbour (January 25), Bellingen (January 26), Port Macquarie (January 27), Bundagen (January 28), Bellingen (February 4), Melbourne (February 6-8), Brisbane (March 13-18) and the Sunshine Coast (March 27 to April 1).
