On June 19, police arrested some 100 women at a march in Filabusi organised by Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA). The protesters were demanding the reinstatement of their children, who had been expelled from their schools for failing to pay fees. Two months earlier President Robert Mugabe’s government had imposed school and college fee increases of more than 1000%. They also demanded Mugabe’s resignation for failing to honour his election promise to provide free or affordable education for the poor. According to a WOZA statement after the protest, which marched to the education ministry’s district office, it “caused a great stir in the rural town with many people leaving their offices to witness the

event”.
