GUINEA: Ten students shot dead

17 November 1993

On June 12, up to 10 students were killed when security forces shot protesters in Conakry. The students were demonstrating against the cancellation of pre-university exams after teachers joined a nationwide strike against price rises for fuel and basic goods. The strike began on June 8 and shut down Conakry and other major towns. On June 13, police fired tear gas at protesters on barricades. United Nations secretary general Kofi Annan expressed “deep concern” at the killings of students and appealed to the government to exercise restraint.
