Climate change campaigning

17 November 1993

SYDNEY — Residents of Marrickville in Sydney's inner west have formed a climate change campaign group, one of many local groups forming in Sydney suburbs, including Bondi, Maroubra and Newtown.

Sixteen people attended the Marrickville Climate Action Now (CAN) meeting on May 30, most of them new to campaigning but all recognising the urgent need to force the state and federal governments to support sustainable energy and transport. They discussed helping to stop the proposed Anvil Hill open-cut coalmine in the Hunter Valley, forcing the NSW government to commit in law to a renewable energy target of 15% by 2012, winning much faster investment in Sydney's creaking public transport system, and stopping any backsliding on the sustainability rules for new buildings in NSW.

The next meeting is on June 27, 7pm, Marrickville Town Hall. For more information, phone Robert on 0411 448 516 or email <brucek08@optusnet.com.au>. For information about other groups in Sydney, or starting your own, contact Melinda at (02) 9279 2522 or <mcook@nccnsw.org.au>.
