PHILIPPINES: International investigation into labour killings

3 May 2006

Delegates from 12 countries, including Australia, will visit the Philippines in early May to investigate the killings of union leaders and the repression of worker activists. Some of the cases to be looked into include the recent killing of United Luisita Workers Union leader Tirso Cruz and the murders of Bayan Muna-Tarlac secretary-general Florante Collantes, Tarlac City councillor Abelardo Ladera and Nestle Philippines union president Diosdado Fortuna. According to Angie Ladera, chairperson of the Workers’ Alliance in Region III, “To date not a single perpetrator of the 71 murders and abductions that occurred since last year have been arrested and brought to justice”.
