BRITAIN: Call for a new workers' party

26 April 2006

On March 19, 450 people attended the London launch of the Campaign for a New Workers Party (CNWP), at which it was announced that more than 1300 people, including leaders and members from 25 different unions, Labour Party councillors, Green Party activists and Respect and Socialist Alliance members had signed the “declaration for a new workers’ party”. Among those who addressed the launch were representatives of the Socialist Party, who initiated the project, the Public and Commercial Services Union and Respect. A motion adopted by the meeting called for a “fundamental break with the big business parties” and a “fight for a socialist program” that included a living minimum wage, full trade union rights and fully funded democratically controlled public services.
