On April 6, South Africans commemorated the 27th anniversary of the execution of Solomon Kalushi Mahlangu. Mahlangu left South Africa following the 1976 Soweto Uprising to join the armed wing of the African National Congress, Umkhonto we Sizwe. He returned the following year ready to continue the anti-apartheid struggle but was arrested soon after. In 1978 he was sentenced to death. His last words before his execution on April 6, 1979, were “My blood will nourish the tree that will bear the fruits of freedom. Tell my people that I love them. They must continue the fight.”
