Australian nationalism

22 February 2006

NEWCASTLE — A Socialist Alliance and Green Left Weekly-sponsored public meeting on February 7 was addressed by GLW journalist Sarah Stephen on Australian nationalism and the role of racism in the white settlement of Australia.

Stephen described how Australian Aborigines, Pacific Islanders, Malays and Chinese were forced to work under atrocious and degrading conditions. A rare copy of Don McCleod’s book How the West Was Lost was circulated. McCleod worked with Aboriginal stockmen in WA in 1946-68 and joined their battle for equal pay.
