UNITED STATES: Majority oppose Iraq war

22 February 2006

In a February 9-12 USA Today/CNN/Gallup Poll, 56% of US residents surveyed described themselves as opponents of the Iraq war, compared to only 40% who said they were supporters. Fifty-five per cent believe the US invasion of Iraq was a mistake. In the previous Gallup poll, taken on January 20-22, for the first time a majority of those surveyed (51%) said the Bush administration had “deliberately misled the American public about whether Iraq has weapons of mass destruction”. In the latest Gallup poll, just 31% said the US was winning the Iraq war, the lowest reading ever. CNN reported that the poll also found that 68% of those surveyed said the Democrats “had no clear plan for the country”, while 67% said the Republicans lacked one. Fifty-nine percent said they were angry about the direction the country was heading in.
