UNITED STATES: Rules changed to allow Guantanamo Bay executions

The US Army has changed rules governing where military executions can take place, clearing the way for possible executions of detainees in the military prison camp at Guantanamo Bay. Previously, executions could only be carried out at a military jail in Kansas. Any Guantanamo detainees sentenced to death in military tribunals may now be executed there. On January 13, German Chancellor Angela Merkel told US President George Bush during a meeting at the White House that he should close the Guantanamo Bay prison camp. Bush responded by claiming it is “a necessary part of protecting the American people”.
