Free speech is dead: long live sedition!

17 November 1993

ADELAIDE — Fifty people gathered on the steps of Parliament House on November 28, surrounding a coffin shrouded with a black cloth declaring “Free speech”, to protest against Howard’s new “anti-terror” laws. Organised by the socialist youth organisation Resistance, the protest highlighted the fact that the new sedition laws have nothing to do with terrorism, but are intended to criminalise and silence dissent. Resistance activist Gemma Weedall told the protesters that it is important to refuse to be intimidated by the laws, a sentiment echoed by lawyer and Adelaide Romero Community member Greg Mead, who also spoke.
