On October 13, the US government’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced that the average global temperature for combined land and ocean surfaces for September 2005 was 0.63ø C above the 1880-2004 long-term mean. It was the warmest September since 1880, when reliable instrumental records began to be kept. The second warmest September was in 2003, at 0.57ø C above the mean. Land surface temperatures were highest on record for a September, with temperatures 2.8ø C above normal across large parts of Asia and North America.
