HOBART — Launceston City Council mayoral candidate Ted Sands has revealed that Boags, one of the two major breweries in Tasmania, pays the council only $50 a year for waste treatment, according to the October 18 Hobart Mercury.

The company would be liable to pay around $400,000 per year according to the provisions of a 2004 payment schedule, but has locked in a previous fee of $50 per year through a 10-year deal beginning in 2003. Boags produces hundreds of thousands of litres of trade waste every year. Six other companies have similar arrangements.
