‘Keep going and you will get there’

After seven weeks, Green Left Weekly’s special emergency appeal is still on target, with $73,413 having been donated. The donations from subscribers and supporters are often accompanied by messages of encouragement and inspiration, many from people in regional areas where an independent, alternative source of news and views is particularly rare — and valued!

Here’s one such message we received last week from two supporters in Dubbo, NSW:

“Dear Green Left Weekly,

Thankyou for publishing such a great newspaper. It’s good to hear an independent voice. God knows, we need to hear a lot more of them.

We are current subscribers and are in the process of covering one wall of our dining room with your very colorful front pages. When we get disheartened by the news or by some conversation down the street, we can sit at the kitchen table and look up to see ‘Howard is Wrong: War breeds Terrorism’, and have some of our basic beliefs reaffirmed, and know that not everyone believes what the majority is told.

Enclosed are some cheques.

1) $100 is to go toward your $100,000 Appeal. Sorry for the delay; keep going and you will get there.

2) $44 is to continue our current subscription for another 6 months.

3) Another $44 is to sponsor a subscription to the local library at Dubbo.

I read a letter about someone trying to read the GLW in the library at Hobart and thought it would be good to have a copy at Dubbo library for a while.
