TONGA: Public servants defy threats, strike continues

10 August 2005

After another week of defiant protest marches and government threats of retribution, the Tongan Civil Servants Strike Committee on August 11 rejected the King’s decision to have an independent auditor examine the pay dispute that is pitting public servants, teachers, doctors and nurses against the Tongan government. The King’s offer was in reply to a petition presented to him following a big march and public rally in the capital Nuku’alofa on August 8 by 3000 strikers and their families. Among the banners demanding wage justice was one emblazoned with the image of Che Guevara. Teachers and students also took part in a large march on August 9. The strike, which has entered its fourth week, is in support of wage increase demands ranging from 60% to 80%. Strikers have appealed to the Tongan communities in Australia, New Zealand and the US for moral and financial support.
