ZAMBIA: Miners revolt

27 July 2005

On July 20, miners at Konkola Copper Mines, angered by reports that a strike at the mine had been abandoned, erupted. The miners are demanding a 100% salary increase, and were frustrated when the unions representing them agreed to a 30% increase. Passing a motion of no confidence in the two unions, they elected a new negotiator, Anthony Chabala. On July 19, Chabala disappeared, and media reported the workers had accepted the 30% deal. In response, the miners marched to the pit, overturned a car, and then marched to town, where they lit a fire in the city centre.
