SOUTH AFRICA: Police attack AIDS campaigners

20 July 2005

On July 12, police brutally attacked and opened fire on a peaceful protest at the Frontier Hospital in Queenstown, Eastern Cape. The 700-strong protest, organised by the Treatment Action Campaign, was demanding anti-retroviral treatment for people with HIV/AIDS and an end to waiting lists, which are resulting in patient deaths. Twenty police fired on protesters, injuring 40 people. One activist was seriously injured and 10 others were treated for gunshot wounds. For more information visit <http://www.tac.org.za>.
