BRAZIL: Indigenous leader shot

6 July 2005

On June 29, a heavily armed gunmen on the Brazil-Paraguay border attacked a group of Guarani Indians, hours after the Guarani, part of the Sombrerito community, had moved back onto land they had been forcibly evicted from 30 years ago by a cattle farmer. Four Guarani were wounded, including a pregnant woman, another four were kidnapped, and Dorival Benites was shot dead. The Sombrerito have been fighting for their land to be returned since they were moved onto reserves in 1975. They have one of the highest suicide rates in the world.
