MALAYSIA: Protesters oppose water privatisation

29 June 2005

On June 21, 200 people, representing 127 organisations, gathered at Malaysia’s Parliament House to protest the proposed privatisation of the country’s water supply management. Malaysia’s ruling National Front party is rapidly privatising basic utilities, and a senior minister recently indicated that the parliament may soon rubber stamp the water privatisation, which is currently before a select committee. The protest was largely organised by the Malaysian Socialist Party and the Malaysian Trade Union Congress.
