Gaywaves ceases broadcasting

11 May 2005

SYDNEY — The final Gaywaves program went to air on April 14 but its team of volunteers has vowed to fight 2SER's decision to axe it. Presenter Tim Govers criticised the station's decision to cancel the long-running gay and lesbian show, which started on air in November 1979, a month after 2SER was launched. “It is one of 2SER's longest-running shows, so to get rid of it now makes no sense", he said.

2SER management is reassuring people that there will be another gay and lesbian program but that program will be run by only one individual rather than, as was the case within Gaywaves, by a collective.

To add insult to injury, station management claims that the quality of broadcasting of Gaywaves is not of a high enough quality. Considering that over the last few years, and especially in recent months, staffing has been reduced, thereby cutting back on support for the volunteers who run, produce and present the program, this is highly offensive.

Messages of support for GayWaves should be sent to 2SER station management <info@2ser.com>, and to <gaywaves@hotmail.com>.
