SOUTH AFRICA: Justice for worker thrown to the lions

11 May 2005

On April 28, Mark Scott-Crossley and Simon Mathebula were convicted of murder by a Phalaborwa court. On January 31 last year, under Scott-Crossley’s orders, Nelson Chisale, a worker who had just filed a complaint over unfair labour practices, was beaten severely and then fed to lions in an encampment at the Mokwalo White Lion Project in Scott-Crossley’s farm. Two others involved in the incident are still awaiting trial. “This shows how ingrained racism still is in this society”, South African Communist Party secretary-general Blade Nzimande told an East Rand May Day rally. “South African workers should never forget Nelson Chisale.”
