Twenty people attended a vigil and BBQ outside Melbourne’s Maribyrnong detention centre on April 23. The vigil, organised by the Australian Democrats, was addressed by Democrats Senator Lyn Allison, Margarita Windisch from the Socialist Alliance and Maribyrnong Mayor Michelle MacDonald. Windisch called for the council to campaign against the federal government’s proposed extension of the centre, which would allow it to hold an extra 55 detainees.
