VENEZUELA: Request to extradite terrorist

4 May 2005

On April 28, the Venezuelan Supreme Court began processing an extradition request to the US for Luis Posada Carriles, a Cuban-born Venezuelan citizen. Posada Carriles is one of the most notorious anti-Cuban terrorists. He is wanted in Venezuela for fleeing prison, where he was facing prosecution for the 1976 bombing of a Cubana Airlines flight, in which 76 people were killed. Convicted in Panama of plotting to kill Fidel Castro, Posada Carriles was pardoned unconditionally. He has since bragged to the Miami Herald of his 1997 attempts to blow up Cuban hotels, during which an Italian tourist was killed. Posada Carriles entered Miami about a month ago, and applied for asylum, through his lawyer, on the grounds that he once worked for the CIA. US President George Bush has refused to comment on the case.
