UNITED STATES: Harvard divests from Sudan investor

13 April 2005

The Harvard Corporation, the university’s highest governing body, announced on April 4 that it would sell its shares in PetroChina, because the company is “too closely tied to genocide in Sudan”. The decision was greeted with jubilation by black-clad students protesting outside, part of a six-month campaign demanding the university divest. PetroChina is owned by the China National Petroleum Company, which has invested more than US$1 billion in a joint-venture with Sudan to increase oil reserves, which have been funding a genocidal war. The students are now demanding the university divest from another five corporations operating in Sudan.
