BRITAIN: Asylum seekers on the march

13 April 2005

On April 2, hundreds of people across Britain joined protests organised by asylum seekers facing deportation from that country. Actions were held in Glasgow, London, Nottingham, Oxford, Canterbury and Manchester, where more than 700 marched. Three feeder marches converged in Manchester, one led by Farhat Khan and her five children. Khan fled Pakistan in 2000 after her husband threatened to kill her; she has since founded Women Asylum Seekers Together. The second march was led by Mansoor Hassan and his family. A journalist, Hassan fled Pakistan after an investigation into government corruption led to targeting of his family. The third feeder march was led by Moses Kayiza, a gay asylum seeker from Uganda, where gay sex is punishable by life imprisonment. Kayiza, Hassan and Khan are all facing deportation.
