SCOTLAND: Soldier's mother to contest seat

13 April 2005

Rose Gentle, the mother of Gordon Gentle who was killed in Iraq last year, announced on April 5 that she would stand against minister for armed forces Adam Ingram in the May 5 British general election. The Scottish Socialist Party immediately announced it would stand down from the seat, and support Gentle’s campaign. Gentle has been one of Scotland’s more prominent campaigners against the Iraq war. She told the British Socialist Worker: “I want to make Iraq an issue in this election. The government wants to try to put it under the carpet. I have chosen to stand in East Kilbride because Adam Ingram has not given a damn about anybody. He’s still sending troops to Iraq. He doesn’t care.”
