UNITED STATES: Students suspended for refusing military test

23 February 2005

At Fremont High School in Los Angeles, nine students were suspended on February 8 for refusing to take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, a test administered by the US armed forces to match students with its different arms. After realising what the “compulsory aptitude test” was, students at the school protested. The principal told them they would be suspended if they left. Nine, most Latinos, did. The principal told the Los Angeles Times, “there aren’t many options in our society ... most Latinos end up working as housekeepers or at McDonalds”. On the same day, 150 students held an “hour of resistance” against the occupation.
