INDONESIA: Fuel price hike protested

16 February 2005

Within his first 100 days in power, Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono broke his election promise not to increase the price of petrol, kerosene and natural gas. Yudhoyono announced in early February that oil prices would increase this month, with other fuel price rises to follow as subsidies are removed. Protests have been held across Indonesia against the increases. On February 5, around 80 students protested in Jogjakarta; on February 7, 100 students protested in Sumba; the next day 500 people organised by the United People’s Union (ARB) marched in Jakarta; the following day 30 students marched in Surabaya, organised by the National Students League for Democracy (LMND).
