VENEZUELA: General accused of terrorism arrested

16 February 2005

On February 5, National Guard General Felipe Rodriguez was arrested in Venezuela. Rodriguez was charged by state prosecutor Danilo Anderson, since murdered, with being involved in bombing the Spanish and Colombian embassies two years ago and for his alleged involvement in four murders. Rodriguez led 150 dissident military officers in an unsuccessful rebellion against President Hugo Chavez in October 2002. Rodriguez has also been charged with military rebellion. While hiding in Miami in April 2004, Rodriguez revealed in an interview with the Miami Herald that he was forming clandestine groups to overthrow Chavez. A Venezuelan request to extradite him was unsuccessful.
