ZIMBABWE: Social Forum held

24 November 2004

Zimbabwe's Social Forum finally got underway on October 28. As police had refused to allow the forum to go ahead some weeks earlier, organisers had to hurriedly pull together a new venue and date. A contingent of uniformed police kept a watchful eye over proceedings. Diverse organisations such as the Zimbabwe Council of Trade Unions, the World Council of Churches, the International Socialist Organization and the National Constituent Assembly distributed literature from stalls to the 2000 or more people. Participants crowded under marquees to hear AIDS campaigners, workers, small traders and youth activists debate democratic and people-centred alternatives for Zimbabwe based on ideas such as anti-sexism, socialism, grassroots democracy and non-violent direct action.
